PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. August 12, 2009 - Using files and chisels worn to a smooth finish by three generations of family artisans, Stephen DePace breathes life into wood and stone. A self-taught sculptor and full-time maintenance mechanic, DePace owned and operated a successful HVAC business in New York before moving to South Carolina and taking a position at the Lakes at Litchfield, a luxury retirement community located in Pawleys Island, S.C.
From his stint as an entrepreneur and small business owner to his new position as a catch-all for maintenance requests, DePace emphasizes both function and form in his work.
"I've always worked with my hands, and since my family is full of artists, I think I look at the world and my job a little differently than most," DePace said. "When I'm working on an air conditioning unit, even my ductwork is decorative."
Decorative ductwork aside, the 57-year-old began carving sculptures nine years ago in his free time, but his Italian grandfather and great-grandfather worked for years on the intricate stonework found on many Manhattan skyscrapers.
Despite a late start, DePace takes pleasure in knowing the very same tools once used to carve gargoyles and columns now create timeless monuments of his own grandchildren.
" It's a really good feeling to use what they [his father and grandfather] used . it makes me feel closer to them," DePace said.
Although his favorite subject is the human body, DePace's depictions of animals and nature are popular throughout the Grand Strand. A recent participant in a local Artist's Reception at The Lakes at Litchfield, DePace is particularly grateful for the warm reception he continues to receive in Pawleys Island.
"When I first moved down, I couldn't understand why strangers waved at me as I drove by," DePace laughed. "Now, I understand the warmth and kindness of the people who live in this community make it such a special place to live."
